In the last 24 hour, the rescue services in Punjab reported that more than 6,500 people as well as 455 animals had been evacuated into safe areas from several districts. This was after powerful water currents flowing from the Sutlej entered nearby areas.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, 130,000 cusecs was discharged at Empress Bridge, flooding Weaslan, Sahlan, and Lal De Goth. Although the residents and their livestock had already been evacuated, their crops remained submerged in a wide area.

Kahror pucca tehsil, which is located along the other bank of the Lodhran river in the district Lodhran, had been affected by the flood.

According to a report released today by the National Disaster Management Authority, Ganda Wala is experiencing floods of medium intensity along Sulemanki Headworks.

Authorities also stated that districts in the current danger zone include Kasur and Okara.

Farooq Ahmad spokeswoman for Rescue Punjab said that as flooding continued in the Sutlej area, over 1,000 people were rescued by 254 boats.

He then gave a breakdown on the number of livestock and people rescued over the course of 24 hours in different districts across the province. Ahmad says:

Bahawalpur : 1 263 people and 339 animal evacuated

Pakpattan : 1740 people evacuated

Kasur: 1,519 people and 20 pets evacuated

Vehari: 1 202 people and 63 animal evacuated

Similar operations were also underway in Multan (Sahiwal), Rajanpur (Khanewal), Bahawalnagar (Layyah), Lodhran, and Okara.

The rescue service reported that from the 9th of July to 27th, 112,137 persons were evacuated and transported from areas affected to safer places.

Relief Activities

Earlier that day, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported flooding in areas surrounding the Sutlej since August 17th.

According to the report, 95 medical camps have been established across the province. They provide health care services to those in the affected districts. Twenty ambulances stood by in the event of an emergency.

The PDMA noted that 36,000 individuals have been treated so far. “About 178 other relief camps also operate in the affected district”.

A transport service was made available to over 200,000 people, and around 70,000 of those affected were provided with cooked food.

The PDMA also added that 150,000 cows received preventive medication and vaccinations, while 25,000 were transferred to safe places.

Nabeel Jameed, Punjab Relief commissioner said the relief work would continue till floodwaters recede.

“All resources are used for rehabilitation in flood-affected zones,” said he. “I am pleased with the work of rescue agencies.”

Javed also added that the reports about a drop in flood waters were encouraging and expressed the hope that things would get better in the days to come.
