To combat vandalism, the city spent $1,000,000 in grant money.

A new survey shows that vandalism has become almost unavoidable in San Francisco’s restaurants.

According to the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, only 3% of 74 restaurants that were surveyed reported not having experienced property or graffiti crimes within the last month.

San Francisco Chronicle reports that the city spent over $1 million on grants since 2021 to reduce vandalism. Nearly 800 businesses received grants for vandalism such as graffiti, broken glass or other forms of vandalism.

The outlet reports that San Francisco Police Department’s graffiti unit has assigned a full-time officer to the investigation of graffiti.

Businesses are also suffering, and it is costly to repair the damage.

ABC7 reported that a pizzeria located in San Francisco’s Mission District was attacked recently with acid.

The glass is too acidic to remove. Supreme Pizza’s Leandro Jayme, the owner of the outlet, said that the glass had to be replaced. Even a square of small glass can cost him $300.

Shuggie’s in Mission, which also received a grant, but stopped trying to remove the graffiti almost every day, is one of the restaurants that gave up.

In this city of crime, shoplifting is a major issue.

San Francisco’s stores were equipped in the past with unheard of security measures designed to discourage shoplifters.

To combat theft, many retailers and supermarkets have invested in extreme security measures and hired private security guards.

Safeway, a supermarket chain in the Bay Area, has installed check-out doors which require customers to scan receipts. Walgreens reportedly chained its freezers after thieves attacked the store between 15 and 20 times per day.

Businesses in San Francisco’s Union Square will hire private security by 2021 to fight the smash-and grab robberies which plague the area.

Proposition 47 is partly responsible for this increase in shoplifting. This 2014 law, approved by voters, made the theft of goods worth under $950 as a misdemeanor. It often does not receive any investigation.

According to a poll conducted in 2022, a majority of Californians are for changing Proposition 47 so that penalties can be reinstated for certain types of thefts.

According to data from the police, overall crime has declined in San Francisco this year. However, certain violent crimes have increased.

So far there have been 40 murders, an increase of 3%. So far, thefts are up 16% to 2,039 crimes. The number of car thefts has increased by 11%, to 5,038.

Businesses have left downtown San Francisco because of crime, drug abuse and homelessness. Foot traffic in the area has also slowed.

Recently, a number of large retailers abandoned their locations in downtown San Francisco. Westfield Mall, AT&T Nordstrom, Whole Foods, and two hotels closed down their downtown San Francisco locations recently.

According to city preliminary data, the city’s ongoing drug epidemic reached an alarming milestone in August with 84 drug-related deaths. San Francisco has seen 563 drug-related deaths so far in 2018.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, homelessness has continued to worsen. On any given night in the Bay Area, approximately 38,000 people are homeless. This is up by 35% since 2019.
