Karolina Osinska has filed a complaint with Aberdeen City Council after claiming that the property of the Aberdeen City Council was damp upon her arrival and when she arrived in Aberdeen.

The local council insisted that the damp flat was safe, but a mum with her three kids has been forced to leave it.

Karolina Osinska, who was pregnant with her third baby at the time of moving into Aberdeen’s property, moved in in December 2020. Karolina claims that the apartment was damp before they moved in. She complained to Aberdeen City Council but received no response. She said that despite her efforts to remove the mold, it always returned.

A leak in the apartment above her caused the bathroom ceiling to fall and crumble. After returning home from vacation, the single mother discovered a mess. The single mother claims that she called the emergency number of the local council twice in August but no one showed up.

The council employee arrived shortly after Karolina was inside the apartment, but left soon afterwards. They claimed they could not access it despite Karolina waiting.

Karolina was forced to leave the flat of her council due to serious dampness and mold. The council was notified of her damage by sending photos. Seven weeks after the first report, an inspector assessed the damages. Karolina says he felt “totally terrified and shocked” when attempting to enter the restroom, for fear that the ceiling could collapse.

Karolina still pays rent for the apartment, despite moving out along with her three children aged 4, 2 and 10. The local authorities allegedly refused her request for a reimbursement. She left a few belongings behind in the apartment, but is worried that they will have to be removed due to mold. Aberdeen Live reports that she is now waiting to be nominated for a replacement property.

Karolina has spoken to several housing associations, but they all have lengthy waiting lists. She has bid on more than 40 properties in order to find a home with three bedrooms. Karolina has labelled the accommodation provided by Aberdeen City Council (which is responsible for 22,000 properties) as “unsuitable”, “a safety risk”

She said that she moved because of her concern for the safety of herself and her children. The council’s inability to ignore a mother who has young children is beyond comprehension.

Poor ventilation caused the walls of the bedrooms to be wet. The dampness in the flat made the family cough frequently. The smell of “rottenness” was also reported by the woman. The conditions in which she lived affected her health, both physically and mentally. She said, “The worst part is they do nothing about it.”

They were just trying to sweep this under the rug, they haven’t done anything. “They were trying to brush this under the carpet, but they’ve done nothing.”

Aberdeen City Council spokesperson confirmed that they are addressing this issue. He said: “We’re aware of the complaint regarding this property, and we are working directly with the residents.”
