Some residents of Delaware were having a difficult time getting ready to leave for the day on Friday.

There’s nothing worse than leaving your house with all your things, including your children, coffee and purse to get to work only to find that your car was not waiting for you. “It’s horrible,” New Castle County Police Officer Cpl. Michael McNasby.

McNasby reported that three residents had left their cars unattended as they warmed up. Within minutes, one vehicle was stolen, while two others were broken into.

A crime occurred in New Castle on May Avenue, and another in Wilmington on Anderson Drive.

McNasby says that vehicle thefts have been on the increase.

McNasby said, “I think that we have seen a 110% rise in vehicle thefts compared to the previous year.” This many vehicle thefts ties up officers and resources which could otherwise be better used.

In these cases, officers have yet to make any arrests, but in the past two weeks they’ve charged eight minors aged between 14-17 years with multiple counts of thefts and other charges.

Yesterday, three juveniles were arrested. McNasby said that they were able link offenders with 10 different vehicle thefts in Delaware.

Many of the juvenile suspects, he said, are repeat criminals.

Police and AAA remind drivers to be vigilant in order to prevent future thefts.

Jana Tidwell, a AAA spokesperson said that it is no longer necessary to heat up your car for mechanical reasons. Always lock your vehicle. “Never leave valuables visible in your car, particularly during the holidays.”

Use an Apple Tag to track your vehicle, and park near cameras in areas that are well lit. McNasby said that a few simple steps could prevent you from becoming a victim.

McNasby stated that Kia and Hyundai vehicles remain the most commonly targeted, therefore owners are advised to take additional precautions such as locking their wheels.

The suspects also steal catalytic convertors, he said.

Two men are wanted by police for removing the catalytic convertors of two cars in the parking lot where employees park at Nemours Children’s Hospital, on Tuesday.

The men believe that the gray/blue Nissan Pathfinder is being driven by these two.

New Castle County Police is the best place to contact if you know anything about this incident.
