The hazardous haze caused by Canada’s fires has caused a dystopian, orange color to appear along the U.S. East Coast. This led to canceled sports events, field trips for schools, and Broadway performances.
Wildfires are a hazard that is well-known to West Coast workers. This includes delivery drivers, construction workers, and farm workers. Many workers were unaware of the situation in the East due to the novelty of a smoke-stained sun.
Unprepared workers quit their positions in the middle of the day, not able to carry on. The majority, though, continued to work as soon as the sky cleared.
They haven’t.
A smoky blanket of smoke from the wildfires burning in Quebec and Nova Scotia has continued through Thursday and could continue into this weekend because of a lagged weather system.
On Friday, New York City Public Schools will use remote instruction for their classes. To protect the workers in Philadelphia from air pollution, garbage collection, cleaning of streets, and repair work were all suspended. The majority of elementary and middle school students were required to work a clerical-free day.
Some companies in California and western states provided N-95 face masks to employees and permitted them to take their breaks inside, but the labor rights group demanded that there be more protection.
Food delivery workers in New York City walked the streets despite a Code Red alert on Thursday.
Bimal Jhale (43), who had worked as a cook in a restaurant that morning, attempted to make deliveries on Grubhub Wednesday afternoon but felt dizzy. He recovered a bit by evening and attempted again.
We can’t miss a day, Jhale said, speaking in Hindi with a translator for the Justice for App Workers organization.
A spokesperson for Grubhub said that drivers who do not feel safe making deliveries will not face any penalties, and anyone with pre-existing health conditions is advised to stay indoors.
In recent years labor agencies have implemented rules in California, Oregon, and Washington that require employers to protect against wildfire smoke. This includes N95 respirators and breaks, and even moving some operations inside. The bill was passed by Gov. Gavin Newsom bill of 2021 allows farmworkers access to the N95 mask stockpile.
Wildfire smoke had in the past traveled from the West Coast to the East Coast, but this week’s conditions were especially severe. There is no official guideline on wildfires that are raging in the East, and there are also no federal standards. However, employers must follow general laws to provide a safe working environment to protect their workers against wildfire smoke.
A study conducted last year found that drifting smoke from wildfires can lower workers’ earnings quarterly by 0.1% per day. This amounts to $125 billion in lost wages each year.
Mark Borgschulte is an assistant professor of Economics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and one of our authors. He said in the study that the effects of smoke on the labor market or earnings go beyond days of bad smoke. People are more likely to suffer heart attacks during bad air quality. It can affect them for a very long time.
Smoke from wildfires can cause hospitalization and death in vulnerable individuals. Scientists have also linked smoke exposure to health issues in the long term, such as decreased lung functions, weak immune systems and increased flu rates.
Even when regulations are in place, it is hard for union activists to convince companies to adhere to them.
Tony Cardwell says that despite the new rules on wildfires, he and rail companies have clashed over the protection of workers in California. Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (which represents track maintenance employees) is emailing railroads this week in order to request protections such as monitoring air quality and changing work schedules.
Amtrak made N95 masks and KN95 available to employees. Non-critical outdoor work, which requires the employees to be outside in hazardous air conditions was also postponed. Norfolk Southern’s spokesperson said that the company monitors its air quality, and gives N95 masks when needed.
Other companies have taken similar steps.
Delta Air Lines’ ground crews will come indoors during the interval between plane turns. This is when one flight pulls into the gate, and another pushes away.
Alex Kopp wrote a letter urging members to take safety precautions. The group is concerned with the effect of poor air quality on the safety of job site workers. He acknowledged, however, that the “current air quality poses a new problem.”
According to the Local 3 IBEW in New York, a union affiliated with AFL-CIO that represents electricians, despite public warnings about staying indoors on Wednesday, two job sites were closed due to poor air quality.
Many workers were left on their own to deal with the danger.
Victor Aucapina, renovating a Brooklyn home while sitting on the curb for his lunch break pulled his shirt over his face between bites. Aucapina, the sole breadwinner of the family, said that even though he had kept his children from school on Wednesday, he could not miss work.
He was surprised when the sky turned yellow at lunchtime, and the wind carried a burning tree smell.
He didn’t expect it to be as bad but is now feeling the smoke. If conditions do not improve, he may need to bring in a respirator. But missing work is “the last resort.”
Many workers took a long time to recognize the danger of wildfires this large in the East.
When he first heard the news about wildfires in Washington, D.C., the construction worker was unaware of anything. Duckett carried on working despite a coworker suffering from sinus problems caused by smoke.
Duckett thought that it was foggy.
Duckett, like New Yorkers, expected skies to clear by the afternoon.
In the capital, warnings for air pollution deteriorated on Thursday from “Code Red”, to “Code Purple”.
