A couple of Youngstown homeowners were surprised by what began as an ordinary day.
The knock at the door of Jadewood Circle awoke them.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene when they saw smoke rising from the building. “They were the ones who knocked at the door,” Jerrad Hiers said, Lieutenant of Bay County Fire Rescue.
The homeowners were surprised when the deputy told them their attic had caught fire.
Hiers stated that “they were totally unaware of the fire burning around them.”
Bay County Fire Rescue responded next and extinguished the fire.
This section of Highway 231 northbound, directly south of Highway 388, was reduced to just one lane.
Even though the homeowners claim that their chimney has cracks, they still light their fireplace.
Hiers said, “They told me that this was probably post-Michael damage which wasn’t addressed.”
Bay County Fire Rescue claims that the fire would have been completely prevented if the damages had been repaired.

The damage to the roof was limited and contained only in the attic.
The officials are pleased that no one was injured or killed.

After approximately three hours of work, Highway 231 was fully open.
