The damage caused to the roads of Co. Cork by Storm Babet has already been estimated at EUR50m. However, as assessment continues, it is expected that this bill will be much higher.

A few bridges in the county have also been badly damaged after fast moving rivers.

East Cork accounted for half of the damage, while parts of North Cork as well as the Carrigaline region were also affected.

Flooding has destroyed some Midleton housing estates. The council is required to build reinforced walls along the riverside.

Dave Clarke is the senior road engineer of East Cork Council. He said that the damages are so extensive and severe, some repairs will take “well into next year.”

The damage was so extensive that he told the East Cork Municipal District Council that it might take him a couple of weeks to provide a complete list.

Repairs are being prioritized by the council.

Fine Gael Councillor Michael Hegarty stated that the costs of damage would increase as engineers carried out more thorough examinations.

The local authority can then seek assistance from the government to pay for the cost once the total is determined.

Councillors in East Cork have written to the energy companies to ask them for discounts on dehumidifiers that will help people dry their homes.

The flooding has also delayed the planned opening of part of the Greenway between Midleton and Mogeely.

Hegarty stated that the OPW should ensure the Ballinacurra estuary, which is near Midleton, was dredged. The area has become so silty, some houses nearby had water gushing through the floors.

Mr Clarke told me he would relay his concern to the OPW and see if this could be added to the flood defense scheme for the town.

Council will seek funds to help clean up a North Cork river that is so full of silt, debris and other pollutants it floods homes in Ballyhea & Churchtown.

During Storm Babet the River Awbeg again burst it’s banks, trapping several people in their homes, including an 80-year-old woman who couldn’t leave her home for over two weeks.
