The police have detained a total of 154 suspects

In Kano, yesterday the debris of a destroyed building fell on three scavengers and killed one.

The Guardian published an earlier report about a mass invasion by youths who looted roofing sheets and iron rods as well as interlock blocks and other valuables that were found in illegal buildings demolished or destroyed by the state.

About 11:00, the youth began draining the concrete ruins along Murtala Muhammad way to extract iron rods.

Ibrahim Yakub (Director General of Kano State Urban Development Authority, KNUPDA) confirmed the news, stating that four metal-scavengers had been trapped under the rubble while looking for metal.

Yakub who headed the government taskforce on demolition of illegal constructions said that three people had been rescued with serious injuries while another was discovered unconscious. Later, it was confirmed to be dead.

Yakub warns that those who enter demolished structures illegally risk dying.

In order to minimize public disturbances, demolition began at night.

However, he regrets that the youths trampled on the wreckage.

Kano State Police Command announces the arrests of 154 individuals at several demolition sites. They were charged with theft, attempted theft and taking of public property.
