South London was hit by a large fire in the wee hours of Friday morning (8 September). About 100 firefighters are fighting the fire in a rubbish centre, which has partially collapsed.
According to the fire department, the whole Herne Hill transfer station has caught fire. Twelve gas cylinders are now in safety because some can explode if exposed to heat.
Due to the smoke coming from the Shakespeare Road Fire, residents are advised to shut their windows.
The area is closed to traffic.
To tackle fires at height, two 32-metre turntable ladles are used on the scene as water towers.

Paul Sadler said that crews were making progress in the fight against the fire at Shakespeare Road. This is an ongoing incident and crews are expected to remain on scene for the entire day.
It’s been a very warm evening, but there is still a large amount of smoke coming from the fire. People in the surrounding area are asked to close their doors and windows as best they can while crews try to put it out.
Avoid the area because of road closures.
