In a fire believed to have originated in a fireplace overnight, a man’s off-grid and partially constructed home between Kingston and Poulsbo has been destroyed.

A neighbor had called 911 at 12:50 in the morning on September 4 to report smoke and fires that were visible through the tree canopy. Dawn Breaker Drive provides homes in deep woods, between Port Gamble Road & Miller Bay Road.

First unit of North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Suquamish Station, reached the hard-to-access site down a steep, narrow driveway within 10 minutes. They reported that the entire 671-foot building was in flames.

A fire had damaged the Jeep of a man parked just 10 feet from his home. Flaming embers then spread to the surrounding woods. Firefighters used the water in their engine tanks and from tender trucks as there were no firehydrants.

Units from Central Kitsap and Bainbridge Island then returned back to their respective stations. NKF&R spent several additional hours digging through debris in order to extinguish all hotspots.

A fire started earlier that evening in the woodstove of the house, the occupant reported. The man saw the flames from a window and fled. Even though the man stated that he had cleaned the fireplace, investigators believe the materials inside of the flue ignited quickly and spread because there was not enough space between the chimneys and the house’s combustible elements.

The fire officials advise that chimneys for woodstoves and fireplaces should be cleaned by professionals and checked at least annually. This man was receiving help from the American Red Cross because his home wasn’t insured.
