Heavy rains, flooding and typhoon Doksuri in Heilongjiang in north China caused severe damage, including the collapse of a part of the bridge on Thursday. Several vehicles fell into the water.
The state-run news agency Xinhua reports that a section of highway linking Harbin to Mudanjiang has collapsed. Two vehicles have fallen into the river.
It hasn’t been revealed how many people are trapped in the vehicle.
Doksuri has been the fifth typhoon this year to hit Heilongjiang. This region is on the red level of alert for storms in China, which is the highest alarm level according to the four color system.
The heavy rains, which were the most intense in over 140 years, severely damaged several bridges in affected areas.
Today, the Chinese government added another 30 million yuan (4.11 million dollars or 3.8million euros) to their 110 million yuan (15.3 million dollars or 13.9million euros) that they announced on Tuesday for repairs to flood-damaged road.
In response to the infrastructure issues caused by the heavy rains that forced Level II Emergency Response, the second-highest in Asia, both the Ministry of Finance as well as the Ministry of Transport released subsidy funds.
The aid comes on top of the hundreds of millions donated by Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance – the parent company for TikTok – just a few days ago.
Doksuri has been a major threat in the area, with Typhoon Khanun being the 6th of the year and causing a Level IV alert to be issued for Zhejiang Province.
