Tom O’Brien, a member of the New Milford High School School Board said that he had “never witnessed a construction job go so badly” than New Milford High School’s roof project.
In an interview with Hearst Media Connecticut, O’Brien said, “It’s a gift that keeps on giving.” He also sits on the Facilities Subcommittee of the School Board. It’s an issue, but for us it is a problem we will never solve.
After an expert determined that the roof did not comply with code, he and other officials worry about its security. A report concluded that the installation of the roof does not pose a “immediate risk to safety” for students and staff.
Work began with a project worth $4.75million to replace the school’s roof, which was damaged by a 2018 microburst storm and its age. Silver Petrucelli and Associates was hired by the Town in 2020 to replace the asphalt roof of the school and restore the flat roof.
During construction, however, there were two fires on the roof. Second blaze resulted in millions of dollars worth of damage from fire, smoke and water to high school.
O’Brien believes that a Greenwood Industries contractor has now completed the repairs. He said he had safety concerns about the clips and fasteners that United Roofing & Sheet Metal installed to secure the roof.
According to meeting minutes, Dean Petrucelli of Silver Petrucelli and Associates reported in May to the Municipal Building Committee that certain roof panels were fastened using two screws, while others had only been secured with one.
United Roofing could not be reached to comment. The company completed the first part of the project, but it was terminated after the second fire.
