Old South may have to wait for years before a new replacement is found, according to a community association
The London City Council voted on Tuesday to close the beloved Thames Park Pool rather than repair it so that it could continue to be used for several more years.
The council approved a motion 8-7 instructing the staff to close permanently the most popular and largest outdoor pool of the city. The motion also instructs the staff to consult the community about the potential addition of a spraypad to Thames Park in Wortley Village or to the Green.
The motion also calls for staff to look into the feasibility of building an indoor pool within the neighborhood, perhaps at Rowntree Park or Murray Park.
Staff recommended that the pool not be rebuilt in spring. They argued that any pool constructed on this site was vulnerable to damage from water and would have to close due to the location of the pool on an area with a high water table and flood plain. The pool was closed in the spring of 2020 due to cracks on the deck.
Two options are available for the repair of the pool. They would either cost $1.9 or $2.3million, and allow it to remain open for several more seasons until a new site for a pool is located.
The pool in both of these cases will open no earlier than the season 2025.
The Old South Community Organization wrote a request to the council that the funds be used for the repair.
A slim majority of councillors, however, decided to close the Thames Park Pool. They instructed staff to find a replacement location. The money spent for repairs is now being used to do a feasibility report on replacing the pool.
Nicole Phillips is the president of OSCO. According to her, residents will be forced to wait for years before a pool can be built.
She explained that the city had a history of shutting down infrastructures and never building any new ones for many decades. The location of the pool that will be decommissioned has yet to be determined. This motion has no timeline. The ambiguity is what causes concern in the community.
Skylar Franche, whose Old South ward is included, has asked the councillors for their support so that the pool can continue to operate for several more seasons until a new plan of replacement is created.
Shawn Lewis, the Deputy Mayor of Toronto said that it was more sensible to redirect money and time towards a new aquatics center.
Lewis says it’s time for Thames Park Pool to go. Lewis said, “Let us invest responsibly in the community… let’s get the ball moving on a new site.”
The Thames Park Pool, with 25,000 visitors annually, was the most popular of the 11 outdoor swimming pools in the city.
