Installing solar panels, the roofing installer is electrocuted
A roofing contractor in Singapore was electrocuted when installing solar panels onto a roof.
Another roofing contractor died on 12 June just three days prior to the Tanjong Pagar collapse.
Singapore has recorded 14 work-related deaths so far in this year. These two incidents are recent.
The worker who installed solar panels accidentally touched an exposed wire
The Straits Times reports (ST) that on the 12th of June, a worker installed solar panels onto a roof.
He noticed that a cable was exposed and “arcing” (emitting smoke) during his work.
He was electrocuted after he somehow came in contact with the wire.
The worker was taken to hospital and died the same day.
Cable was on wet roof
Lianhe Zaobao stated that initial investigations showed that the cable had been lying on wet roof. Rain had supposedly soaked the roof before this incident.
According to the WSH, electrocution can also be a serious hazard when installing solar panels.
Solar panels can produce electricity even without an external power source.
The council advises companies to take preventative measures, such as isolating electrical components exposed and stopping electrical work during rain.
Contractors must also have a safety plan in place to avoid falls.
In 2023 there have already been 14 work-related deaths
ST reported that Singapore had recorded 14 workplace fatalities so far in the year 2023.
The number, although far below last year’s 46 is alarming.
