Winter and the resulting drop in temperatures can lead to mould growth from condensation. A builder has outlined the warning signs and explained why mould could occur. He also explains how to repair it.
Poorly ventilated homes can have a miserable winter. Not only do their heating bills go up, but there may be dampness or condensation. Untreated mould can be the cause of respiratory illness, allergies and asthma.
A builder in Stoke-on-Trent warned that damp could also lead to cracks on brickwork which would cost thousands of dollars to repair. John Sale, from Fenton’s HYPE Building revealed the best way to spot damp and prevent it.
John previously showed viewers a property in the mid-terrace that was experiencing mould and damp. He first pointed out that there are signs of damp in your home, such as peeling wallpaper and bubbles on the walls.
John also noticed that the tenant’s kitchen was flooded only during rain. John said that there was a problem outside, with some damaged tiles in the gutters.
If tiles slide, they may cause leaks in the roof and guttering issues. This allows water to flow down into areas it should not. This particular home was affected by the fact that water would pool down the sides of the house when it rains, into the “rendered” surface, which is like a sponge.
The property also had a problem with the guttering on the main roof running right over the addition, which caused all of the rainwater to run onto the roof above the kitchen. John believed that the water was coming from the roofs and collecting on the ground outside the kitchen.
John believes that water enters the house through the large spaces between the slabs of flooring. He thinks the “sand, cement, and brickwork between the floor and ground levels has all dissolved away”. John also said that the water ingress was due to the fact the outside floor level is higher than the inside, which allows it to seep easily through.
He suggested that the builder fix the drainage pipes on the main home and then add another pipe to run vertically along the side, not overhanging the extension. The builder also stated that he was going to use concrete instead of slabs on the exterior bit in order to create an “outdoor wet room”. It will be necessary to add new grids so the water can move away.
John said that it would be a “huge saving” and could prevent the growth of mold.
